The
charm of the
informal service sector
Cebu City is the economic heart of the south and the second region in
economic importance for the country. Like in all cities in developing
countries, many people are |
active in the service sector. In the industry and
the modern (formal) service sector, there is a lack of enough jobs. That's
why many families have developed their own small business, most of the
time not officially registered (informal). |

All kind of services
Businesses,
give income to the family, enough to life and to make sometimes small
savings. The productivity per person will not be that high, but
most important is that there is always the guarantee of income!

In
the evening, when it is time to have a warm meal, many locals will just go
to a nearby `open air´ restaurants. On these places many families have
their small business in selling food, drinks or just cigarettes. |

Modern formal
service activities
The city has several
business districts, where you can find modern industrial and service
activities. You can find there among others some very big, modern shopping
centres.
Colon

theatres as well as museums and monuments. It is the oldest street in the
Philippines.
