on the list of the countries with
a population of 50 million inhabitants or more.
The total
population in the Philippines in
that year was already more than 76 million. It
is estimated that

What
about the future?
The
population will double within 29 years!
In
2000 the annual population growth rate in the Philippines was 2,36 %. When
that rate would stand in the coming 30 years, the total population will double in 29 years!
Estimations
of the United Nations Population Division however, show for the near
future a more moderate rate of 1,86.per year for the period
2000-2005. Still it will be a too high rate. The growth of the population
pressure will give very serious problems in rural and in urban
areas.
Serious
problems if the growth rate
will
not decrease dramatically!
Creating
enough jobs and providing the necessary basic needs to keep the same
(low) standard of living, will be very difficult if not impossible
when the growth rate will be 1.8 % or higher. Unemployment will rise, more migration to the urban
areas will take place because of lack of possibilities for
subsistence in the rural areas.
In
the urban areas we'll see more and more problems of housing, unemployment,
crime and unhealthy situations. The social and economic overpopulation
will be unavoidable if the growth of the population will not
decrease dramatically.
What
is the
influence of religion?
The
influence of the religions is probably significant. Most people in the
Philippines are catholic. Family planning is necessary but for the
moment not in the minds of the leaders of the catholic church. The highest growth rates
however, are in the southern part of Mindanao (the Autonomous
Region in Muslim Mindanao) where the dominant religion is
the islam.
